Pathminder Update 12 Nov 2024

NEW FARMING AND YOU INFORMATION PANELS

Thanks to a generous grant of £4280 from the Coastal Communities Fund administered by South Ayrshire Council - and superb design work by Ali Beckett Design - we have been able to build (by ourselves) ten “Farming and You” (FAY) information panels for the South Section of the Coastal Path.

These new attractive and ‘user-friendly’ panels are now being put in place to replace the tired old “Farming and Outdoor Access” (FAOA) panels erected in 2010, that are now almost illegible, and rotting on their posts.

On 12 November, a great team of eight experienced Pathminders were out working on installing these new panels. They were split for their unique talents into Team A (Demolition) and Team B (Assembly).

Work began at Lagg Farm near Bracken Bay, where Team A perfected their ‘dig and demolish’ skills, dismantling and removing their first FAOA panel - and then moved on the their next one at Dunure Harbour, while Team B with a fine touch and level eye, delicately planted their first FAY panel.

The system worked so very well, that within four hours we had demolished four old FAOA and erected four new FAY panels from Lagg to Drumshang on Croy Bay - which were INSTANTLY READ and approved by several appreciative passing walkers!

A fantastic, energetic team effort on a fabulous still November morning, that was hugely enjoyed by all those who took part.

That’s four done - with another six to go - in the next couple of weeks.

Money from the Coastal Communities Fund is also being used to fund over 20 “Breeding Shore Birds” yellow advisory signs, which are being placed on the remoter vulnerable beaches from Ballantrae to Ayr, to warn walkers of the distressing danger of trampling on young chicks or eggs during the April- July breeding season.

And money from this fund is also being used at Langdale to set up another alternative signed route to guide walkers clear of grazing cattle with calves.
