2023 Rotary and Ayrshire Coastal Path Beach Clean

Well, the weather wasn’t as kind to us as last year and the teams south of Dunure were apparently showered on more than elsewhere but, nonetheless, this year’s event attracted 250 environmentally conscious folk to tackle 20 beaches between Girvan in the south and Portencross in the north, thus helping to brush-up our spectacular coastline. These commendable individuals collected a total of more than 400 bags of rubbish along with sundry larger items which had been washed-up or abandoned. Ayr, Alloway, and Prestwick Rotary clubs along with Ayrshire Coastal Path volunteers all helped organise the big event with enthusiastic and essential assistance from the two councils, South Ayrshire and North Ayrshire. Thanks are due to many, including various community groups, charitable organisations, youth groups, holiday park owners, farmers, landowners and dozens of individual volunteers. Update April 2023 Toilet facilities and refreshment stop now open, most Sundays April to September 2023   Skelmorlie Secret Bunker is a fully restored Royal Observer Corps underground monitoring post which was built in 1964 as part of a nationwide UK Cold War civil defence programme, in order to detect and report on the effects of a Nuclear Attack. It is the only free admission, fully restored monitoring post in the West of Scotland and only one of two in Scotland normally available for public access (the other is in Arbroath) since the official stand-down of the posts in 1991. In 2017 a visitor portacabin was installed on the site to provide a reception point and small museum, this being adjacent to Stage 12 of the Ayrshire Coastal...
